Mosquitoes are a common issue in Sri Lanka, particularly in popular tourist destinations like Arugam Bay. The warm and humid climate provides the perfect breeding ground for these pesky insects, leading to high populations in the area. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance, but they also pose a significant health risk due to the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.
In Arugam Bay, the mosquito situation is exacerbated by factors such as stagnant water bodies, poor waste management practices, and lack of proper mosquito control measures. These conditions create ideal breeding sites for mosquitoes, increasing the likelihood of disease transmission. Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya, and malaria are prevalent in the region, posing a threat to both locals and tourists.
Efforts are being made to address the mosquito situation in Arugam Bay, including regular fogging and larvicide treatments to control mosquito populations. Additionally, public awareness campaigns are conducted to educate the community about the importance of personal protective measures such as using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved clothing.
